A Defining Moment for France and Europe

Reuters reported that those detained are accused of offenses including damaging property and throwing missiles at police. "On top of that, around 8 percent cast invalid votes as an indication of their dissatisfaction with both of the candidates in the second round". Many voters backed him reluctantly, simply to keep out Le Pen's extremism.

The pro-European centrist and former banker takes over a divided country where almost half of voters backed extremist candidates - critical of the European Union, globalisation and "elites" - in the first round of the election.

The centrist has said at least half of En Marche!'s candidates will be new to politics, while Front National has indicated it will change its name in its campaign to become "the leading opposition against the new president's plans".

Emmanuel Macron has won the French presidency, but right now he doesn't have a single seat in Parliament to his name.

This accelerated procedure, bypassing parliament, could mean a fiery start to his term as France's highly activist unions would likely bring protests out onto the streets, as they did a year ago when Socialist Prime Minister Manuel Valls used the tactic.

The French Interior Ministry said with 93 percent of the votes counted, Macron had about 19.3 million votes, while Ms Le Pen secured about 10.4 million.

Freshly elected to the French presidency, now comes the equally hard Act II for Emmanuel Macron: securing the parliamentary majority he needs to make good on his campaign promises to lift France out of economic gloom.

Ishani Shukla, a prospective student who works at the Gateway House Indian Council on Global Relations, said the French election results indicated the advent of a comforting environment.

The little-known Mr. Macron stepped into the breach as a centrist.

The En Marche candidate took 66.1% France's votes, leaving Marine Le Pen, of Front National, trailing behind with 33.9%.

The new French President is pro-reforms and business-friendly, but he promises to be a gradualist. And, despite her substantial loss, the election definitely elevated the National Front and brought it closer to the mainstream.

Kishan Madhavan, who will study global marketing at Rennes School of Business, in France, this September, said, "I am interested in learning French, which is a new language to me, and working with people from multiple cultures".

Another told Fox, "For me it's hope".

Valls, a man deeply associated with the unpopular President François Hollande, supported Macron rather than the Socialist Party candidate during the presidential election.
