DAYTONA BEACH, Florida -Education Secretary, Betsy Devos's commencement address at a historically black college, Buthune - Cookman University in Florida was mired in audience disruptions on Wednesday.
Education Secretary Betsy Devos vowed support for the students at a historically black university at their graduation ceremony but was almost drowned out by booing and shouts of "Liar!"
The biggest chant of boos came when DeVos received an honorary doctorate degree from Bethune-Cookman and said she would pay respects to the university's founder, Mary McLeod Bethune, by visiting her home and placing a wreath on her grave. "Choose which way you want to go", Jackson warned.
President Trump said Secretary DeVos chose to speak at the university to show the administration's dedication to historically black colleges. She later acknowledged that they were created because other schools were not open to African Americans.
Some alumni and the local NAACP leader called for the BCU President Edison Jackson to rescind the invitation as insensitive and misguided.
King also spoke about DeVos' dedication to "educational equity" just before providing different ways the students could have responded instead.
Jackson gave DeVos a hug after her speech, then took the podium when she left the stage. But he said "Bethune-Cookman University can't do it alone". She understood, however, the great value of education, and she understood the nuances of how to balance delicate and hard relationships in order to achieve her ultimate goal of building an institution of higher learning, of which we are the beneficiaries today.
DeVos was booed Wednesday during an appearance at the historically black school.
Some students agreed, saying the school needs help from anyone offering it, no matter their party affiliation.
