At 100 days in, Trump seems both outsider and insider

Bernstein also addressed lying and secrecy in the Nixon White House, but stopped short of drawing a direct parallel to President Donald Trump's administration.

If you spent your Saturday evening escaping the world by watching your favorites movies, relaxing, or dancing with your friends, you may have missed what Donald Trump said at his Harrisburg, Pennsylvania rally.

"It's a false standard, 100 days", Trump said while signing an executive order on Friday, "but I have to tell you, I don't think anybody has done what we've been able to do in 100 days, so we're very happy".

After mimicking his conversation with Chinese President Xi Jinping, Trump simply said, "it doesn't work" to call them manipulators while he is in talks with them to solve their mutual problems in North Korea.

The President held the rally at the same time as the Washington press corps and some bold-faced names were preparing for the White House Correspondents' Dinner.

The mood of the crowd was ebullient, and Trump was interrupted repeatedly with chants of USA, USA.

"A large group of Hollywood actors and Washington media are consoling each other in a hotel ballroom in our nation's capital right now", Trump told the crowd.

Trump said he'd rather be with the "much, much larger crowd" than at the White House Correspondents Dinner.

.

Some of the animosity stemmed from United States media evaluating Trump's 100-day record as meager and mixed.

Washington Post columnist Jonathan Alter argued it was "ridiculous" for Trump to claim he had the most successful first 100 days ever because he had no major legislative accomplishments, unlike many previous presidents.

Toward the end of his speech, he promised to keep going after so-called sanctuary cities, protecting law enforcement, and fighting to repeal and replace Obamacare. "First of all, is there any place like a Trump rally, in all fairness?", Trump said after one burst of cheers.

And so, Trump's split-screen moment may have worked for him on Saturday night, but that's a single battle in his presidency, not the broader war.

"As America and the world is finding out, a conspiracy theorist-in-chief is uniquely unqualified to lead", an opinion piece read.

They have noted embarrassing setbacks for Trump on health care and a travel ban, and reversals on China and North Atlantic Treaty Organisation, while also recognizing campaign pledges he has met, such as appointing a conservative Supreme Court judge and pulling the country out of the Trans Pacific Partnership trade agreement. "Just take an hour, figure out what you want to say, then go on the air".

Trump held that divisive tone throughout the speech, prompting former presidential adviser and senior CNN political analyst David Gergen to call the remarks "deeply disturbing" in a special prime-time edition of "CNN Newsroom" with John Berman and Poppy Harlow. "I love that guy. We're going to bring it down", Trump said. The administration's also launched an investigation into rising steel and aluminum imports on the theory that if those domestic industries suffer, it could pose a threat to national security.

"The previous administration gave us a mess. And that is what we've delivered - 100 days of action".

Mr Trump said full compliance with the agreement could shrink America's Gross Domestic Product by $US2.5 trillion over a 10-year period and "that means factories and plants closing all over our country". "In fact those people and others are exhausted". And every politician knows a good scapegoat when they see one.
