Sean Hannity Sticks Up For Boss Who Loved Bill O'Reilly

NY magazine cites anonymous sources in reporting that Shine recently asked 21st Century Fox CEO James Murdoch and his brother, Lachlan, who's the company's co-chairman, for a statement of support amid a spate of negative publicity for the network.

"Hannity also claimed that Shine was was the victim of an internal Fox News plot to undermine his leadership, tweeting, "Somebody HIGH UP AND INSIDE FNC is trying to get an innocent person fired".

(The "Gabe" in question being NY editor Gabe Sherman, whose four-letter name Hannity quickly apologized for mangling with a bit of textual diaeresis.) Hannity then alleged that the calls were coming from inside the creaky collection of bad institutional practices, suggesting that the push against Shine was a plot from someone at Fox News itself. Fox News Channel has been under intense scrutiny for months, owing to ousters of both former chief Roger Ailes past year and veteran anchor Bill O'Reilly in recent weeks.

Sherman, who has been out in front of all scandal-related Fox News drama for years, reported that Shine has privately complained that the senior Murdoch "isn't fighting for him" in the press.

"By refusing to back Shine at this tumultuous moment for the network, the Murdochs may finally be signaling that they're prepared to make the sweeping management changes they've so far resisted after forcing out CEO Roger Ailes last summer", Gabriel Sherman writes. "#Istandwithbill", he tweeted, before apparently realizing that there was another Bill formerly at Fox News.

There are rumors that Fox News co-president Bill Shine's future with the network is rocky, according to New York Magazine. He has been cited in four different lawsuits brought against Fox News Channel by current or former employees.

Others, however, say Shine's role is so integral to Fox News - and his knowledge of its operations so vast - that there is no way 21st Century Fox would let him go at present, particularly with an ongoing federal probe at hand. "I think the rank and file believe he will be replaced, but who knows?" this person said. The lawsuit came on the heels of last week's ouster of longtime host Bill O'Reilly in the face of mounting sexual harassment charges.

The billion-dollar question hanging over Fox News is who knew what, and when. The end came the day Robert, Lachlan and James Murdoch took day-to-day control of the network.
