Chipotle Reveals Payment System Data Breach (Will Also Start Selling Dessert)

The food chain notified customers on Tuesday that it had recently detected suspicious activity on a system they use to process credit card payments, but didn't offer details on which chains had been affected. The company provided little details on the investigation or its findings thus far.

Chipotle immediately launched an investigation and believe it has stopped the unauthorized activity.

Chipotle warned customers to monitor their debit and credit card statements and to contact their financial institutions if they notice any unauthorized transactions.

The company intends to notify any customers affected by the breach when it receives specifics on the timeframe of the breach and the restaurant locations possibly affected.

According to Fortune, CFO Jack Hartung told Wall Street analysts during an investor presentation that the company's payment processing system was hacked. Payment card network rules generally state that cardholders are not responsible for such charges.

Not one to waste a promotional opportunity, Chipotle also notes that they will soon begin offering their first-ever dessert item: deep-fried tortilla strips with honey, sugar, and a caramel dipping sauce.
