Cowboys target D as expected with Michigan's Taco Charlton

Michigan's Taco Charlton, one of the best names in this year's class, is the pick for America's Team at No. 28 overall.

The Cowboys had only three defensive ends with first-round grades. The discussion focused on whether the club would/should go with an edge rusher or corner. With Charlton, they get as proven a commodity you can get in the draft at that position. It was a bit of a surprise that he fell to the final few picks of the second round, but CU head coach Mike MacIntyre, who spent four years (2003-06) as an assistant with the Cowboys, believes Dallas is a flawless spot for Awuzie. It's been a rollercoaster 18 months for Irwin-Hill, who early previous year was drafted into a new major U.S. football league, which never got off the ground.

But Charlton is a versatile defender who can play left or right end.

Head coach Jason Garrett says Charlton's experience in head coach Jim Harbaugh's program at MI will help in his transition to the pro ranks.

With one need addressed - Dallas also brought in former Texas A&M defensive end Damontre Moore in free agency - the team will look to grab some defensive backs with picks No. 60 and No. 92 in the next couple of rounds.

Dallas has been looking for a dominant pass rusher since cutting franchise sacks leader DeMarcus Ware in a salary cap move in 2014.

Indeed, there is a three-round strategy in play here, which we'll get to in a moment.

Projected by some as a first-round pick, Awuzie was one of 22 players invited to attend the draft in Philadelphia. This is a great opportunity for the Cowboys to add to their defense as they did in Round 1 when they selected Taco Charlton.

The Dallas Cowboys introduced their newest player on Friday afternoon at The Star in Frisco.

Cornerbacks accounted for just four interceptions past year, and none of them had more than one. Also, Charlton spent his entire football career playing defensive end, and did it at a very high level.

"I think there is no question when you put up their level of competition it's a big determining factor", executive vice president Stephen Jones said.

But the Charlton pick was definitely in keeping with that big school philosophy.
