Air China resumes booking flights to North Korea

Graham, a defense hawk who dined with Trump on Monday night, said the North should not underestimate the president's resolve.

North Korea conducted artillery drills yesterday to mark the 85th anniversary of the founding of its million-strong Korean People's Army.

North Korea carried out the large-scale conventional military exercise instead of staging another nuclear test or missile provocation.

North Korea's growing nuclear and missile threat is perhaps the most serious security challenge confronting US President Donald Trump.

The sudden and unannounced move came only six days after the US military command in South Korea secured the land to deploy the system, known as the Terminal High Altitude Area Defense, or THAAD.

The Michigan arrived in the South Korean port of Busan Tuesday.

Kim also said that a clear message was being sent to the South, with North Korea showing 300 pieces of large-caliber self-propelled guns firing "at the same time in retaliation against Seoul, the regions near the Korean Demilitarized Zone (DMZ) including five Northwest Islands at any time"- an apparent drill for what would happen in the event of a pre-emptive strike.

"We need to move more quickly and with greater determination to convince North Korea either to pursue denuclearization or to apply enough pressure that it stops those activities", Toner told a telephone news briefing.

The US says it will only target North Korean missiles, but China and Russian Federation see the system's powerful radars as a security threat.

In 1994, Kim Il Sung, the then-President of North Korea, "believed that the United States was prepared to take military action, and that played a big role, I think, in his calculus", he said. Cmdr. Jang Wook from South Korean navy public affairs said there was no plan for a drill. First, due to generations of mass brainwashing, the North Korean leader commands fanatical loyalty from the overwhelming majority of his populace, as demonstrated by the public adulation displayed during the recent military parade on the Day of the Sun anniversary of his grandfather's birth.

Michael Hayden, the former head of the Central Intelligence Agency, has predicted that North Korea will probably be able to hit Seattle with a nuclear weapon aboard an indigenously produced intercontinental ballistic missile.

An unnamed North Korean Foreign Ministry spokesman said the U.S. administration's policy to maximise pressure on North Korea was "little short of lighting the fuse of total war, " the state news agency reported Tuesday.

After briefing senators in a highly unusual meeting at the White House on Wednesday, Pentagon chief Jim Mattis, Secretary of State Rex Tillerson and Director of National Intelligence Dan Coats issued a statement that toned down military rhetoric and urged the global community to help find a solution to North Korea's nuclear programme.

"The status quo in North Korea is also unacceptable", Trump told a meeting with the 15 UN Security Council ambassadors, including China and Russian Federation, at the White House.

North Korea has bolstered the case for the system by test-firing dozens of missiles over the past year, all of them capable of hitting South Korea.

"We have expressed serious concern to the US and South Korean sides", Chinese Foreign Ministry Spokesman Geng Shuang said Wednesday.

But Beijing has protested vehemently against the deployment, apparently concerned that the system's powerful radar could be used to keep tabs on China, and has imposed painful economic boycotts on South Korean companies in response.

Its deployment was met with threats by the North Koreans.
