UN should consider ´stronger sanctions´ on N.Korea

A Chinese state-run newspaper said Saturday that China would not engage militarily if the USA conducted a surgical strike on North Korea's nuclear facility, noting it would only resort to diplomatic channels to oppose such a move.

A USA citizen has been arrested in North Korea, raising to three the number of Americans now detained by Kim Jong Un's regime and adding to rising tensions between Washington and Pyongyang.

Worry that North Korea could be preparing to conduct another nuclear test or launch more ballistic missiles has increased as the country prepares to celebrate the 85th anniversary of the foundation of its Korean People's Army.

Speaking during a rare gathering of Council ambassadors at the White House, Trump called North Korea "a big problem" that is "a real threat to the world".

"People have put blindfolds on for decades, and now it's time to solve the problem", he added.

Meanwhile, US Vice President Mike Pence is heading back to Washington after visits to Asia and Australia, where North Korea headlined talks.

"The U.S. must realize that ... the preemptive strike is not an exclusive right to the U.S.", North Korea further stated. The exercise showed the North's first explicit intent to attack U.S. Forces in Japan, they said.

"So North Korea doesn't need to give us a reason to have one", Haley said.

Maeil Business wrote: "When a military clash happens in the Korean Peninsula, South Korea will be the first target of North Korea and its military will hold joint operations with US troops to fight back".

Pyongyang's nuclear and missile programs are the subject of renewed concerns in recent weeks, as the blundering Donald J. Trump administration "forgets" where its armadas are.

"But I will say this: If we do a great job, I care much less about the budget, because you're talking about peanuts compared to the important work you're doing", said Trump.

Two Japanese destroyers conducted exercises on Monday with the USS Carl Vinson aircraft carrier strike group that is headed for waters off the Korean peninsula, sent by Trump as a warning to the North.

Nuclear aircraft carrier the USS Carl Vinson is expected to arrive at the Korean peninsula today in a bid to prevent the North testing any more nukes or missiles.

Tillerson and Secretary of Defence Jim Mattis will also hold a briefing on North Korea at the White House tomorrow for the US Senate.

Donald Trump has vowed to stop Kim developing an intercontinental ballistic missile capable of firing a nuclear warhead at mainland America.

In a commentary, Rodong Sinmun, the official newspaper of the North's ruling Workers' Party, said: "The United States should not run amok and should consider carefully any catastrophic outcome from its foolish military provocative act".

Sales of nuclear shelters and radiation-blocking air purifiers have surged in Japan in recent weeks as North Korea has pressed ahead with missile tests in defiance of United Nations sanctions.

"The North Korean nuclear and missile problem is an extremely serious security threat", Abe told reporters in Tokyo after the phone conversation with Trump, the Associated Press reports.
