Turkey's Supreme Election Board to assess referendum appeals until noon

The threshold was only reached because of an unholy alliance between the ruling AKP party, where everyone voted for the amendments, with no-one expressing a dissenting opinion, and the right-wing Nationalist Movement Party (MHP), where a majority supported the government.

Supporters of the constitutional change-President Recep Tayyip Erdogan chief among them-argue that the country needs a presidential system (rather than a parliamentary one) to respond quickly to threats at home and overseas.

It grants excessive executive powers to the President and allows him to rule at least until 2029 if he will be elected twice (starting from 2019).

Expert at the Center for Strategic Studies under Azerbaijani President, Javid Veliev, said that the new system will primarily strengthen the authorities' powers and will help to make important decisions faster. Separately, the Department of State also urged voters and parties to focus on collaboration and dialogue in the aftermath of the referendum, while protecting the fundamental rights and freedoms of all citizens regardless of their vote.

In Sunday's referendum, the "Yes" campaign won over 51 percent of the votes, while the "No" campaign gained almost 49 percent.

"This referendum will forever remain controversial", he told reporters.

Binali Yildirim said Wednesday the electoral board would rule on the main opposition Republican People's Party's request for the referendum's annulment.

But the global electoral monitor said that while the referendum's technical processes were well administered, there were key issues related to media coverage and the circumstances under which the vote occurred, such as Turkey's ongoing state of emergency enacted after a failed coup d'etat attempt a year ago. "Some see the allegations as a stain on Turkey's reputation as a sophisticated and model democracy in a part of the world where autocrats are the norm".

HDP's Cencar said there were great number of unsealed ballot ticket which he said were the greatest evidence that showed the fraud and irregularities.

Turkish Minister for EU Affairs Omer Celik accused the Organization for Security and Co-operation in Europe (OSCE) mission, which oversaw the constitutional referendum in Turkey, of a biased approach.

The German government has also questioned the vote after the European Union called for a probe into the result.

"The German government takes the report by the OSCE and the Council of Europe very seriously, and we expect Turkey to do so", German foreign ministry spokesman Martin Schäfer told reporters in Berlin.

Electoral board head Sadi Guven said the objections would be evaluated later on Wednesday. Meanwhile, government spokeswoman Ulrike Demmer said: "We will follow closely how Turkey behaves on this".

Opposition parties have promised to challenge the outcome.
