Tesla's Elon Musk says company's semi truck coming in September

Tesla Inc. CEO Elon Musk says the company plans to unveil an electric semi-truck in September.

Musk tweeted, "Tesla Semi truck unveil set for September".

Tesla is all ready to catalyze manufacturers and consumers to transition to electric vehicles more rapidly by coming up with compelling electric vehicles to market and Semi is a key part of this plan. Shares rose 2.4% Thursday, to $304 - all of the gains came within an hour of Musk's tweet. That plans appears to have been pushed back a bit, and will undoubtedly be met with huge expectations.

The company's share price peaked at around $294.65 per share on Tuesday, giving it a total market value of over $50bn. Although little is known about the semi truck, you can expect it to feature an all-electric powertrain and Musk has said the team "has done an awesome job", so there's likely some next-generation technology heading its way. The reveal of the Class-8 truck will likely precede its official production by 12-18 months, if not more. The company is known for sleek, pricey electric sedans.

Tesla previous year sold 84,000 cars, generating $7 billion in revenue. The addition of a semitrailer and pickup would boost its lineup.

The master plan, released as a blog post on Tesla's site, lays out the company " s path beyond the Model 3, with plans for an electric cargo truck equipped with autonomous driving technology called Tesla Semi; a new-style electric bus, smaller than current models, capable of operating without a human driver; a pickup truck; a small SUV.

Musk confirmed that the final version will be unveiled in July, with the first batch of units delivered to customers as early as the end of this year. The new Model 3 is expected to sell for around $40,000.

Adding a semi truck to the production schedule for Tesla is an ambitious project. The value of the vehicle manufacturer's stock has shot up 41 percent to record levels so far in 2017, making the Silicon Valley company a close competitor with General Motors for the biggest American automaker title.
