Massive anti-Maduro protests continue in Venezuela

Throssell urged the Venezuelan public “to use peaceful means to make themselves heard” and called on all parties involved to renounce violence.

A 19-year-old student died on Tuesday (Apr 11) after he was shot during clashes between Venezuelan police and demonstrators, prosecutors said, the second death in a week at violent protests against President Nicolas Maduro. As night fell, many streets still reeked of tear gas and a small group of youth burned trash and tore down street signs at busy intersections in eastern Caracas. "We want to uphold the law".

The protests erupted April 1 after the Supreme Court stripped congress of its last vestiges of power, a decision it later reversed.

"The democratic exercise demands respect for the current institutions and citizens and not the use of violence", said Saab.

"I am eager for elections to be convened for governors and mayors" to teach the opposition a lesson, Maduro said Sunday on his weekly television program.

Regional governorship polls were postponed indefinitely in December and municipal ones are due later this year amid a chaotic political struggle.

"That's the only way there will be peace in Venezuela", president of the National Assembly Julio Borges said.

Government officials sent images and videos via Twitter of hooded and masked protestors destroying public property such as a bus stop, accusing the opposition of orchestrating violence to destabilize the government.

"Enough with impunity", he wrote.

The opposition is demanding a date for gubernatorial elections that were supposed to take place previous year, as well as a timeline for future elections including the presidential vote, which is constitutionally mandated for 2018.

Police fired tear gas to disperse crowds that had gathered in the capital Caracas. The national police threw tear gas bombs at [medical] clinics where people were being treated, including children. A degraded pyrotechnic charge propelling the cartridge could also lead to uncontrolled explosions, he said.

As the most dominant figure in the opposition over the past decade, Capriles has been at the forefront of the protests, the most combative since a wave of anti-government unrest in 2014 in which dozens of people were killed, many at the hands of security forces.

Maduro is fighting efforts to force him from power over an economic crisis marked by severe shortages and the world's highest inflation.

"The Bolivarian government stands by its commitment to guarantee the tranquillity and social wellbeing of our people", he said.

The reactions come just a week after fifteen member-states at the Organization of American States (OAS), including Argentina, Mexico, the USA and Canada, signed a controversial statement during an extraordinary meeting denouncing an altercation in Venezuela's constitutional order.

It said that Venezuelans have the right to demonstrate peacefully and "to see the political conflict immediately solved".

"The repression is not an invention of the media".
