Sensex vaults 213 pts ahead of economic data, earnings

The S&P BSE Sensex was trading at 29,604.09, up 28.35 points while the Nifty50 was trading at 9,183.45, 2.00 points higher.

European and Asian stocks were mixed as rising tensions in the Middle East and political uncertainty in Europe kept investors on the edge.

USA stocks closed fractionally higher yesterday amid geopolitical tensions, while investors looked ahead to the start of earnings season.

The company is expected to release their earning results on Thursday.

The NSE Nifty also moved up by 55.55 points to end at 9,237. Banks continue to look forward to NPA resolution measures shortly, and the strength was visible today.

In contrast, the BSE market breadth was bullish - with 1,746 advances and 1,142 declines.

The rupee recovered some of the lost ground after taking a battering overnight, advancing 6 paise to 64.50 against the United States dollar amid mild selling of the American currency by exporters.

Looking at the sector-wise performance, banking and financial stocks outperformed other sectors.

The major Nifty gainers were ITC (3.11 per cent), ICICI Bank (2.16 per cent), Bank Of Baroda (2.10 per cent), Power Grid (1.97 per cent) and L&T (1.84 per cent).

In terms of investments, provisional data with the exchanges showed that the foreign institutional investors (FIIs) sold scrip worth Rs 750.52 crore, while the domestic institutional investors (DIIs) purchased scrip worth Rs 826.66 crore.
