'Unprecedented' mid-week storms in Atlanta force 3000 Delta cancellations

Delta Air Lines is still canceling flights three days after severe thunderstorms caused big disruptions at its hub airport in Atlanta.

Passengers were stranded at Hartsfield-Jackson International Airport overnight after severe storms rolled through Georgia on Wednesday causing several cancelations.

One passenger said his flight was delayed multiple times before he arrived at Hartsfield-Jackson Airport.

The airline said it is still getting planes and crews back in position for flights.

You are entitled to a refund if your flight is cancelled and you do not travel. "A travel waiver has been extended through the weekend to help customers rebook without change fees if travel plans are flexible", Delta said in its Saturday statement.

Flights to Atlanta's airport were temporarily halted this morning at Atlanta's airport because of severe storms. "We waited until 3:30 [a.m.] until they just said yes, it's cancelled". Delta went the extra mile a year ago by giving out doughnuts, pizza and drinks to passengers when over 2,000 flights were cancelled due to a power outage. Delta rescheduled them on a flight for Saturday, but then that flight was canceled.

In 2015, Delta handed out free pizza to Atlanta-bound passengers who were diverted to SC due to stormy weather.

To get to Memphis would require waiting until Saturday, and spending another night in Atlanta.

Delta's systems were also overtaxed: Many travelers struggled to get information or rebookings from Delta's app, its website or from its customer service phone line. I hope they learn from how they're caring for their customers right now.
