Dallas looking at why emergency sirens sounded in error

Residents were told not to call 911 or 311 if the sirens were sounded again. The city's website says there are 156 outdoor warning sirens placed throughout the city.

The city of Dallas' tornado emergency siren system was hacked on April 7, resulting in a city-wide malfunction that set off the sirens for two hours in the middle of the night. Rocky Vaz, the director of the city's Office of Emergency Management, said all 156 of the city sirens were hacked and activated, Dallas Morning News reported.

City officials said a system malfunction was causing the sirens to go off which started just before midnight. The city's Office of Emergency Management says there is no emergency and they are asking people not to call 911.

WFAA, Dallas' sister station of KSDK, viewers began reporting the sirens at around 11:44 p.m. Friday.

Locating the hacker, however, "is going to be a very long process if we do find out who actually did it", Vaz said. "We will work to identify and prosecute".

"This is yet another serious example of the need for us to upgrade and better safeguard our city's technology infrastructure".

The incident, initially labeled a "system malfunction", sparked an avalanche of anxious posts on social media and calls to the emergency 911 system. Technicians are trying to determine how to bring the system back online without the risk of it being hacked again, he said. "Making the necessary improvements is imperative for the safety of our citizens", Mayor Rawlings said.
