Republican ACA 'Repeal and Replace' Efforts Quiet Ahead of Easter Recess

More than half of Americans approve of Obamacare for the first time ever in the latest blow to Donald Trump's new health plan.

Almost 55 per cent of Americans now support Obamacare or the Affordable Care Act, up from 42 per cent in November, a new Gallup Poll found.

Nine in 10 Democrats, 78 percent of Independents and even 51 percent of Republicans want the Administration to make the ACA work - including a majority (54 percent) of Trump supporters, according to the nonpartisan, nonprofit foundation, which focuses on national health issues. Americans overwhelmingly want health insurance companies to cover emergency medical care. The infighting among Republican lawmakers could not be resolved despite the White House mounting a serious effort.

However, it has apparently become increasingly popular since Trump was elected on the promise to repeal it.

Vice President Mike Pence and two top White House officials made the offer in a closed-door meeting with members of the House Freedom Caucus, but there are still deep divisions within the GOP.

Ryan repeatedly said before the introduction of the AHCA that the Republicans would repeal and replace Obamacare by the end of March.

It remains unclear whether the tweaked bill could garner enough support from Republican House members to win passage, or when the full House might take up the measure.

Freedom Caucus member Rep. Mark Sanford of SC said: 'I've heard nothing of substance at this point that would break the logjam'.

Since the Affordable Care Act was enacted in 2013, the individual and employer mandate has been a huge concern to Republicans, who feel that the government should have a smaller role in health care.

These include an Affordable Care Act provision prohibiting insurance companies from declining to write policies for people with serious diseases.

In a press conference announcing the new amendment, House Speaker Paul Ryan said the new amendment showed the House GOP was moving forward with its plan to repeal and replace Obamacare, the healthcare law officially known as the Affordable Care Act.

Some 55 per cent thought it went too far in cutting existing programs, while only 35 per cent felt it didn't do enough to end Obamacare.
