Russian police check suspicious object in St. Petersburg

"Shocked & saddened by news of terror blast in St Petersburg; my deepest condolences to bereaved families, people & government of Russian Federation", he tweeted Tuesday.

Russian Federation might need foreign help in its investigation of the deadly bombing on an underground train in St Petersburg, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said.

The blast occurred on Monday afternoon after the train had left Sennaya Ploshchad station.

The main suspect from yesterday's terror attack at a Saint Petersburg metro station is a Russian citizen who was born in Kyrgyzstan, as reported by Kyrgyz intelligence to Moscow. Earlier in the day, Kyrgyz officials were only telling us that they believed that it was someone who was born in Kyrgyzstan who had acquired Russian citizenship, and the phrase suicide bomber was not even being used. The foreign ministry of the Central Asian nation of Kazakhstan said one of its citizens has been killed in the attack.

Authorities believe the suspect was linked to radical Islamic groups and carried the explosive device on to the train in a backpack, reports claim.

ST. PETERSBURG, Russia (AP) - As the residents of Russia's second-largest city try to regain their nerve in the wake of a fatal subway bombing, officials announced Wednesday that six people have been arrested on suspicion of recruiting others to commit extremist crimes.

"We don't know the exact number of those killed, but it is about 10 people", Andrei Kibitov, a spokesman for the Saint Petersburg governor, said.

Russian news agencies say the St. Petersburg subway stations shut down after a bomb threat have reopened.

Suicide bomber Dzhalilov was radicalised just two months ago on a trip to his native Kyrgyzstan when he said goodbye to his parents ahead of the St Petersburg train massacre. The Moscow metro said it was taking unspecified additional security measures in case of an attack there.

St. Petersburg, Russia's second-largest city with over 5 million residents, is the country's most popular tourist destination and the two stations affected by the blast are some of the subway's busiest.

And in a sign of a city on edge, the FSB security service told TASS news agency it had found and defused a "homemade explosive device" during a search in a Saint Petersburg apartment building.

On Tuesday morning, 53-year-old Oleg Alexeyev, who trains bomb-detecting police dogs, went to the station where the stricken train pulled in and victims were taken off.

Investigators were still checking their contacts, it added, but noted that as of now, "there is no information about any links between the detainees and the perpetrator of the terror attack".

No one has claimed responsibility for the bombing, but Russian trains and planes have often been targeted by Islamist militants.
