PEW: Christianity Dying Out In Europe, Islam Expanding

The number of people born with no religious affiliation is set to shrink, with the number of babies born to Christian or Muslim parents set to expand from 64% of the world's population in 2010-2015, to 71 per cent in 2055-2060, according to a report by Pew Research Center.

The report, by non-profit Pew Research Center, also predicts that Islam - already the world's fastest-growing religion - could become the largest faith by the end of the century, Dailymail online reported. In the last few years, 33% of babies worldwide were born to Christians, while the total Christian share of the world's population was 31% in 2015. "In Germany alone, there were an estimated 1.4 million more Christian deaths than births from 2010 to 2015", the Pew report states.

Despite a relatively young and fertile Christian population in sub-Saharan Africa, Christians have accounted for a disproportionate 37% of the world's deaths in recent years. This is likely due "in large part because of the relatively advanced age of Christian populations in some places". This gap is expected to broaden between 2055 and 2060, where an expected number of 232 million babies will be born to Muslims and 226 million will be born to Christians.

By contrast, the total number of births is projected to decline steadily between 2015 and 2060 for all other major religious groups, said the study, which was released yesterday.

The analysis is based on data from the recent report, The Future of World Religions: Population Growth Projections, 2010-2050, by Pew Research Center as part of the Pew-Templeton Global Religious Futures project, which analyses religious change and its impact on societies around the world.

Two years ago, Pew said that by 2050 the number of Muslims will almost equal the number of Christians around the world.

Christian births numbered 223 million between 2010 and 2015, while Muslim births numbered 213 million.

But Islam is growing even faster.

The Christian population is growing more slowly because on average it is older than the Muslim population, Pew found.

"Between 2015 and 2060, the world's population is expected to increase by 32%, to 9.6 billion", noted Pew.

As per the report, Christians for years were the largest group for several years, with 7.3 billion faithfuls. Muslims have the youngest median age (24) of all religious groups, which is also expected to contribute to their rapid growth.

However, these shifts play only a minor role in overall religious population changes. "As a result, according to the Pew Research projections, by 2050 there will be near parity between Muslims (2.8 billion, or 30% of the population) and Christians (2.9 billion, or 31%), possibly for the first time in history", Pew said. However, they only produce 10 percent of the world's babies.
