I thought coming out would disappoint my fans: Barry Manilow

In the interview, the intensely private Manilow revealed that he had not openly discussed his almost four-decade-long relationship with Kief before now - at the age of 73 - because he feared that he would let down his predominantly female fan base by doing so.

Manilow, best known for his love ballad 'Mandy' and the Latin-tinged pop number 'Copacabana (at the Copa)' confirmed his sexuality two years after gossip media discovered his marriage to his manager Garry Kief.

Barry additionally discusses his first marriage to his high school sweetheart Susan Deixler, stepping out and living with a woman he was rumored to be romantically involved with (when in reality he was seeing Garry), and why he's been reluctant to discuss his sexual orientation.

Born in New York City in 1943, Manilow said he knew early in his life music was one of his strongest passions. "Everybody that I know knows".

"I'm so private", Barry told People magazine. I was pretty lonely before that.

Barry Manilow hid being gay for decades because he thought he would be "disappointing fans if they knew". "I was too young".

"The reaction was so handsome strangers commenting, 'Great for you!' I'm just so grateful for it", says Manilow. Manilow, 73, has publicly come out as gay, confirming his 40-year romance with husband Garry Kief, and explaining why he kept his secret for so long.

Manilow also noted that he was touched by the positive support from his fans about his relationship, after news broke in 2015 that he and Kief had tied the knot. He's a self-confessed "private guy", who has never felt the need to divulge any information regarding his personal life in the past. "My story is out and I look forward to many more years of sharing my music", he tweeted. "So I never did anything", he admitted.
