House rejects amendment to allow Legislative staff to hide carry firearms

The House of Delegates voted to approve House Bill 1443, which would allow five more licenses to grow and process medical marijuana.

The Indiana House approved a bill requiring parental notification in some cases when a minor seeks an abortion without parental consent, despite disagreement between lawmakers over when a parent would or would not receive notification.

Senate Higher Education Committee Chairman Kel Seliger, R-Amarillo, quickly accepted the amendment to his bill and it was quickly approved 20-10 - along party lines - just like the bill had been initially approved the day before.

The original bill by Sen.

Maryland first made a decision to allow medical marijuana in 2013, but only academic centers were permitted to grow and dispense the drug.

"I am the House sponsor of this bill, which is meant to lessen the burden on individuals who wish to obtain a license to carry a handgun", King said.

Meanwhile, another, more restrictive proposal to regulate medical pot has been making its way through the House of Representatives.

A bill that would make the state school superintendent a political appointee of the governor, passed the full Senate Tuesday despite attempts by Democrats to kill the proposal.

House Bill 300 would lower the license fee to "lessen the burden" for carry license applicants, he said. "I think that also a life sentence of unemployment is certainly something that we're all going to pay for one way or another".

Before the final vote, an amendment passed that would limit future tuition increases to no more than one percent over the rate of inflation.

On Monday, the House amended the medical marijuana bill.

The House Human Services Committee adopted an extensive set of amendments to the bill - outlining what forms the cannabis could take, and lowering the fee for individuals to use the product from the proposed $200 a year to $50.

Sen. Juan "Chuy" Hinojosa, a McAllen Democrat whose district includes the Coastal Bend, said Senate Bill 712 would close a loophole that leaves some domestic violence victims and their families at risk. Under the bill Bradley filed in January, the state health department would have been required to add more treatment centers only when an additional 250,000 qualified patients registered with the compassionate use registry.

Rep. Randy Brodehl, R-Kalispell, is carrying the bill and rejected the amendment during House debate of the amendment.

Lawmakers in 2014 and 2016 passed laws that allowed medical marijuana for limited numbers of patients, including a measure a year ago that allowed it for people who are terminally ill.
