Roger Federer, Microsoft's Gates to play doubles for charity

Roger Federer can regain the number one ranking in the near future if he continues his fine form, believes arch-rival Rafael Nadal.

As we already said, it was the mission impossible to see some new players between 2005-2009, as the series was dominated by Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal, leaving no room for some older opponents to snap off anything from them. "I played the right way, like I have so often done this year, just very committed, and it paid off at the very end". You will probably see me at the French.

After that win, Federer confirmed he intends to avoid competitive action until Roland Garros hosts the year's second grand slam between May 29 and June 11. Nadal, on the other hand, is expected to feature in the complete swing of his favourite surface clay.

"That is why this break coming now in the clay court season and focusing everything now on the French, the grass and then the hard courts after that is going to be the key for me", he added.

Before Federer began his break, he put in a plug for idyllic Key Biscayne, a premier tournament site for 31 years.

"On the big points I was just maybe a little bit better", Federer said. "When I'm healthy and feeling good, I can produce tennis like this".

"I'm feeling motivated and I want to get out there more".

Federer broke Nadal's serve in the eighth game of the first set and again in the ninth of the second to beat him for the third time in as many meetings this year.

The second set took an nearly identical path, albeit with fewer openings to break for both players until Federer again pounced, to grab a 5-4 lead when Nadal went long returning a fine backhand.

The 18-time Grand Slam champion admits he has reached an age where he has to take greater care of his body and believes, following the rigours of Melbourne, Indian Wells and Miami, that he needs to take a rest. But all of the grass is important to me. Despite that he can reach the number one position quite easily given his passion and his will to win and also given the fact that two of his major modern day contemporaries Novak Djokovic and Andy Murray haven't had really great seasons so far.

Even so, Federer's recent run is remarkable.

He has won the biggest tournaments of the year - the Australian Open, Indian Wells and the Miami Open - and this after missing six months of last season with a knee injury.

Federer's vast repertoire was on display throughout the tournament.
