Canucks suffer 11th straight home loss in defeat to Sharks

Losing him would be a tremendous blow to San Jose, who are looking for a more successful cup run in the 2017 spring campaign.

Thornton was scheduled to be re-examined in San Jose on Monday after leaving Sunday's game late in the first period at Vancouver.

Besides Thornton, San Jose is still dealing with the absence of Couture, who has missed the last four games after taking a deflected puck to the mouth.

Unable to put weight on the leg, he labored to the Sharks bench with the support of his stick and stumbled to the dressing room, aided by trainers.

"I think we're built for this type of adversity", Pete DeBoer said.

"We've got lots of options", DeBoer said. "It's a great challenge for us ... we're confident as a group". We're a team that's a sum of our parts, not about one or two guys.

Jannik Hansen, in his first game against the Canucks since he was acquired by the Sharks on February 28, was given a video tribute at Rogers Arena. "Once the game starts it's business".

Patrick Marleau also scored into an empty net for the Sharks with 2.6 seconds remaining. Vancouver has scored one goal or less in seven of the last 11 games.

The Sharks will play all three games at home, against the Canucks, Oilers and Flames.

DeBoer said the Sharks have been better than their record indicated.

Calgary hosted Anaheim later Sunday.

The Sharks are 2-8-0 in their last 10 games, while Vancouver has dropped four straight. The Canucks last win at Rogers Arena was on February 18. Vancouver set a franchise low - not including lockout-shortened campaigns - with 186 goals in 2015-16 and look nearly certain to dip below that with four games left on the schedule. "That's what kept us alive", Canucks forward Daniel Sedin said. "We finally started really strong". Lately we haven't been good enough at home.

At the time of Thornton's injury, the Sharks were leading 2-0 on two goals by Hertl at the 11:00 and 12:51 marks, with his first goal snapping a 16-game goal drought. Mikkel Boedker took a backhand shot that Canucks goaltender Ryan Miller stopped but Hertl shoveled in the rebound.

The Sharks' forward then made it 2-0 just under two minutes later when Marc-Edouard Vlasic's point shot hit Canucks defenseman Alexander Edler in front and bounced right to Hertl, who buried his second.

"Sometimes you're trying so hard and everything's going wrong", Hertl said of his slump.

Bad news, though, could be coming for the forward and his team as the season winds down.

The Canucks pressed late before Marleau sealed it into an empty net with his 27th of the year in the dying seconds.

The Baertschi goal was Vancouver's first in 133 minutes of play.
