NORC Poll: Most disapprove of Trump, except on economy

Almost six in 10 Americans disapprove of Mr Trump's overall performance, and about the same percentage say the country is heading in the wrong direction, according to a new poll by the Associated Press-NORC Center for Public Affairs Research carried out amid the collapse of the Republican party's healthcare overhaul.

The survey was conducted over five days preceding and following last Friday's withdrawal of the GOP health care bill.

A majority of white Americans, 53 percent, approve the job Trump is doing, according to the poll.

By comparison, a Gallup poll at this point in the Barack Obama presidency found that the 44th president had 60 percent approval rating.

A majority of Americans favor an independent investigation into President Trump's potential ties to Russian Federation, a new poll finds.

— More than 6 in 10 Americans disapprove of Trump's handling of health care, the worst of seven issues tested in the poll. That was its elimination of the tax penalty on people who don't buy coverage, though by a modest 48 percent to 35 percent margin. Independents have a favorable impression by 33-55 percent, Democrats by 10-85 percent and Republicans by 78-14 percent. Results released by Public Policy Polling put the commander-in-chief's approval rating at 40 percent the week after House Republicans failed to garner enough support to pass their intended replacement for the Affordable Care Act. It was conducted amid the collapse of the GOP's health care overhaul.

While Trump was not the most popular candidate in presidential history, it appears he has lost some support in the first two months of his term in office. Almost 9 in 10 Democrats and more than 6 in 10 independents disapprove of Trump, while 8 in 10 Republicans approve of the job he's doing.

The GOP bill scared off many Republican lawmakers after the Congressional Budget Office projected there would be 24 million more uninsured people over a decade and a boost in out-of-pocket costs for many, especially poorer people and Americans nearing retirement age. Even among those approving the job he's doing in office, about 1 in 5 was unhappy with his approach to health care.

— Eighty-six percent call health care a very or extremely important issue to them personally, almost as many as the 87 percent who say the same about the economy.

Whether people approve or disapprove, the survey found that the majority of Americans believe that Trump has been fulfilling his campaign promises, with 57 percent agreeing or strongly agreeing that he is.

Almost 20pc of those who disapprove of Mr Trump's overall performance still approve of how he is handling the economy.

Almost 6 in 10 voters -59 percent - said Trump's conduct as president embarrassed them, according to the poll. Almost two-thirds of Republicans say the country is headed in the right direction, while just a third of independents and less than a fifth of Democrats say the same.
