Jo Konta becomes first Brit to win Miami Open

In a tournament filled with entertaining battles and surprising upsets, the 2017 Miami Open title comes down to world number 11 Johanna Konta against former world number one and 12th seed Caroline Wozniacki.

The Czech broke Wozniacki in the first game of the match but the Dane fought back and at 5-4 had three set points, which Pliskova manage to deny her. British 10th seed Konta used an aggressive game plan to overcome Danish 12th seed Wozniacki on the Crandon Park hardcourt.

However, the see-saw nature of the final continued as 26-year-old Wozniacki immediately broke back before holding her own to take a 2-1 lead. She was ranked 150th in the world at the end of 2014 and improved to 47th in 2015, but her biggest improvement came past year. "I'm going to learn from the things that I can do better, but at the same time not beat myself up too much and just keep working and doing what I'm doing".

Konta said she expects a big challenge ahead in order to capture her second title of the year after a Sydney crown. She ran a marathon for goodness sake.

Serena Williams may not have been playing, but that hardly dilutes the achievement of winning probably the biggest event by a British woman since Virginia Wade took Wimbledon forty years ago.

World number 20 Strycova said: "I think it's not OK".

There is undoubtedly a chance to consolidate her position in the World Top 10, but more importantly, the double-headers in Indian Wells and Miami are like mini-Slams, with play every other day for the field, it is a decent dress rehearsal for the stamina and mental fortitude to conquer the Slams. "But I got a good start to the second set and that got me going, got me grinding".

"I play smart tennis and calmer tennis I think".

"I was very fortunate that throughout the years I've managed to have some very, very good people around me", she said.

"I needed to go through certain life experiences, not just on court, off court as well, to I think make me into the competitor that I am and also the person off court".

Victory gives Konta the most significant trophy of her career.

"I just want to work and try to really bring out in myself the most that I have".
