Family speaks after remains of girl found

Magnus said that finding the girl's remains was not the ending authorities were hoping for, but he added that finding her remains does not close the case.

The next morning her father, Sergio Celis, reported her missing when he went to her bedroom to wake her up for a baseball game, but she was gone.

He did not elaborate and say how long the six-year-old girl's body may have been in the desert or what had led to her death.

In the final moments of his press conference, Chief Magnus stressed that he believes somebody might know something about what happened to Celis.

On Friday, Tucson, Arizona police announced that remains found nearly a month ago are those of a six-year-old girl, Isabel Celis, who disappeared from her bedroom almost five years ago. Tucson Police Chief Chris Magnus told reporters Friday afternoon that her body was found in "rural Pima County" and was identified by a DNA match.

Investigators spent weeks conducting door-to-door and widespread searches, 18 months after she disappeared.

Police never named any suspects, but they said they found "suspicious circumstances around a possible entry point" in the home.

It is not yet known how she died and the police chief would not release information about how her remains were discovered, but explained it was'not by happenstance'.

He said the department followed up on more than 2,200 leads in the case and that they will continue the investigation to locate anyone connected to the girl's death. They say they are grateful the search is still on, but it was tough to look at this new picture.

Tucson Medical Centre, where Isabel's mother works as a nurse, issued a statement on behalf of the girl's family.

The statement reads: "We want to thank the community for the support they have continued to show for Isa over the years and for refusing to give up hope". We ask for privacy during this time so that we can do that'.

Magnus said the department received a tip, which lead to the discovery of the remains.
