Protection of Mosul Civilians an 'Absolute Priority — UN Chief

UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres on Thursday visited Baghdad and met with top Iraqi officials to show support for the Iraq's fight against the Islamic State (IS) militant group.

"Just arrived in Iraq to focus on the dire humanitarian situation on the ground".

Jaafari stressed on Iraq's call on the worldwide organisation to "adopt a draft to criminalise the terrorist ideology and fight extremism in order to protect the societies from the risk of recruiting their sons in terrorist groups", the statement said. "We are strongly hopeful that the liberation of Mosul will soon be completed", Guterres said alongside Abadi, according to a copy of his remarks.

He called on Iraq's leaders to build "a State in which all communities respect each other and reconciliation becomes something natural", according to a United Nations statement.

Camps have been set up around the city to provide shelter for the displaced, while others are staying with relatives, renting accommodation or residing in makeshift shelters or unfinished buildings.

The UN said earlier this month that some 600,000 civilians were still in west Mosul, with 400,000 of them trapped in the Old City, a maze of narrow lanes that is making it hard for the Iraqi forces to avoid close combat with the extremists. He said protecting civilians was an "absolute priority".

Three policemen were among the dead while the rest were civilians, and a number of police were also wounded, the officials said.

The US-led coalition that has been carrying out strikes against IS says it "probably" played a role in reported civilian deaths in west Mosul.

The jihadists still pose a threat, however, even in the capital, and would continue to do so even if they no longer controlled significant territory.

At least 15 people have been killed in a suicide auto bomb attack on a police checkpoint in Iraq's capital Baghdad, officials say.

The fight to take back Mosul began in October, backed by the USA -led worldwide colaition.

Iraqi special forces and police fought ISIL to edge closer to the al-Nuri mosque in western Mosul on Wednesday, tightening their control around the landmark site.
