Miami officers wounded in 'ambush-style' shooting, police say

Two undercover Miami-Dade police officers were shot on Monday night but are reported to be in stable condition, according to the local chapter of the Fraternal Order of Police.

According to police, at about 10 p.m. Monday White and Woods were inside an unmarked auto at 1937 NW 60th Street when at least two people went up to their vehicle an began shooting.

At least one of the officers fired back, John Rivera, president of the Miami-Dade police union, said, and both survived the attack in the city's Brownsville district.

The wounded officers were rushed to the hospital in the bed of a pickup truck and were able to limp inside with the help of their colleagues.

Maj. Hector Llevat said one of the officers returned fire, but it was not immediately clear whether he hit his assailants.

Miami-Dade Mayor Carlos Gimenez and Miami-Dade Police Director Juan Perez arrived at the hospital where the officers were being treated.

"Let's work together to find a resolution", Perez said.

As to whether suspects remained on the loose, Miami-Dade police would say only "the scene remains active" and urged anyone with information to come forward.

"They are lucky to be alive. We need the officers so that doesn't make sense", Brown said.
