Nunes had secret meeting before revealing Trump surveillance info

"In the House, our chairman and Trump transition team member Devin Nunes seems to be running his own intelligence service, receiving classified information regarding our investigation and exclusively briefing it to the president", wrote Swalwell. Nunes' behavior last week had led to speculation he'd been provided information by the Trump administration in order to provide cover to Trump, who has accused former President Barack Obama of ordering his Trump Tower office wiretapped during the election cycle. Mark Warner, D-Va., vice chairman of the Senate Intelligence Committee, asked Meet the Press host Chuck Todd Sunday, saying it's "more than suspicious" that Nunes went to the White House to fetch the information.

Congressman Devin Nunes was on the White House grounds the day before he announced that he had information showing that President Trump had been incidentally spied on by the government. Why would Nunes need to brief the president on documents he viewed at a facility on White House grounds?

However, there are a number of locations in Washington, D.C., that offer the same access - leading some to wonder if the location of the meeting indicates the information came from inside the White House.

Just two days after the hearing, Nunes made the surprising disclosure that an undisclosed number of Trump transition members - and possibly Trump himself - had been swept up in surveillance reports following the election in what the chairman described as incidental collection that appeared to be "legal" though perhaps inappropriate.

Here's what Nunes actually said last week: "I want to be clear, none of this surveillance was related to Russia, or the investigation of Russian activities or of the Trump team".

"We thank Mr. Manafort for volunteering and encourage others with knowledge of these issues to voluntarily interview with the committee", Nunes said.

It came a day after FBI Director James Comey told Nunes' panel that his agency was investigating possible "coordination" between Trump aides and Moscow.

Republican Representative Devin Nunes has over the last week or so caused many to question whether Republicans in general - and Representative Nunes in particular - can impartially carry out an investigation into any ties that Donald Trump and his administration might have with Russian Federation.

Democrats, and some Republicans, have said Nunes' actions raised serious questions over whether his committee would be able to conduct an impartial investigation of Russian hacking, the USA election and any potential involvement by Trump associates. Nunes told me that he expects that his committee's members, including Democrats, will be able to read these documents themselves at secure locations outside of Congress as soon as this week. "The country really needs to have an independent and credible investigation in the House".

But when Devin Nunes learned that Russians living in Trump Tower had been directly monitored by intelligence agencies in the United States, he apparently leaped to the conclusion that this meant that Donald Trump himself had also been - however inadvertently - monitored by the Federal Bureau of Investigation. At the White House.
