Uber Stops Testing Its Autonomous Fleet After Crash in Arizona, USA

Uber has temporarily suspended its self-driving vehicle testing following an accident in Tempe, Arizona, according to recent reports.

Uber says two operators were in the SUV at the time, but no one was seriously hurt.

Josie Montenegro, Tempe police information officer, said, "There was a person behind the wheel".

The autonomous vehicles are part of a program to test the self-driving cars on the road in an attempt to one day put them to widespread use.

Nonetheless, Uber said it would suspend a self-driving auto program until an investigation been conducted. Uber will continue to investigate the accident and should offer additional details later. Last year, the Transport Department of US had released a 15-point guideline for manufactures of autonomous cars.

Uber's auto was in self-driving mode when the collision happened and the company are looking into the incident, the taxi app's spokeswoman also confirmed. Its self-driving cars were later forced off the roads of California by the Department of Motor Vehicles for not having a valid permit.

Although there were no injuries reported, there was a passenger in the self-driving SUV, police said according to KNXV-TV, and the driver of the other vehicle was cited for a moving violation. Yesterday, one of these Volvo test vehicles was involved in a awful accident and now the company has suspended its complete self-driving fleet. Also notable is that there wasn't an Uber passenger in the auto at the time.

Already mired in several controversies, this crash is the latest in a string of highly public incidents involving the ride-sharing company.

Uber's aggressive move into self-driving cars has been characteristic of a company that is not afraid to rock the boat.

The collision comes amid a whirlwind of controversies surrounding the troubled company in recent months.

Last week, Uber President Jeff Jones said he was quitting after six months on the job.
