Malaysia Reverses Decision On "Beauty and the Beast"

There have also been homophobic petitions regarding the "exclusively gay moment" involving LeFou.

The Kuwait National Cinema Company said on Tuesday it has made a decision to ban the movie, citing its "responsibilities" despite it already having been screened.

Israelite said the moment, while brief and not at all graphic, is "pivotal".

The film sees Josh Gad star as LeFou, opposite Luke Evans' Gaston. Although homosexuality is not illegal in Kuwait, LGBT people can face jail time for "debauchery". Disney, however, threatened to pull the movie from the country if it were to be censored. "Second is the suggestive song lyrics with sexual innuendos, and the third is a scene that takes place at the end of the movie".

Officials on the Islamic nation's film classification body said the movie can be shown with no cuts, and the equivalent of a PG13 rating.

A government official said the reversal came after a film appeal committee reviewed the movie and decided that the scene wasn't offensive.

Despite the live-action Beauty and the Beast breaking box office records in March, Disney isn't interested in making a sequel. Gay sex is considered an imprisonable offense in Malaysia. According to local rules, gay characters are allowed to be depicted onscreen only if they show repentance or are portrayed in a negative light.

Bailey also reiterated that any future remakes will continue to blend what audiences love most about Disney classics with some modern tweaks - like giving Belle a feminist twist in Beauty and the Beast. But despite receiving a 16+ rating, the movie has been a success at the Russian box office, SF Gate reports.

Doubt over whether the Southeast Asian country would screen Power Rangers began to brew amidst the Beauty and the Beast imbroglio.

Beauty and the Beast has still been a box-office hit in the United States and around the world despite the backlash against the homosexual content.

"Beauty and the Beast confirmed for 30 March without cuts", the chain tweeted.

"Beauty and the Beast" played in 44 major worldwide locations, representing 66% of the global market.
