Trump on Iraq War: US 'Should Never Ever Have Left'

After meeting with U.S. President Donald Trump on Monday, Iraqi Prime Minister Haider al-Abadi said he had received "assurances" from the White House that the U.S. government will increase support for Iraq as security forces continue to combat the Islamic State and the government works to reconstruct areas liberated from the extremist group's control.

Speaking at the United States Institute of Peace, al-Abadi said he felt the Trump team is "more engaged" with the subject of fighting terrorism than that of former president Barack Obama.

But as Iraqi forces come closer to recapturing the city of Mosul - it's militant group's biggest stronghold in Iraq - the extent to which the Trump administration is willing to commit to efforts to rebuild Iraqi cities, many of them in ruins from the fighting, remains to be seen.

Their talks came shortly after Federal Bureau of Investigation director James Comey said the Federal Bureau of Investigation and Justice Department had no information to substantiate Mr Trump's claims Mr Obama wiretapped him before the USA election. I know Mosul is moving along. "It will happen. It's happening right now", he said.

In a meeting on the 14th anniversary of the USA invasion, Trump questioned whether the United States should have pulled combat troops out of the country.

"One of the things I asked him was why did President Obama sign that agreement for Iran because nobody has been able to figure that one out", Trump said.

US President Donald Trump (R) meets with Iraqi Prime Minister Haider al-Abadi in the Oval Office in the White House on March 20, 2017, in Washington, DC. "Perhaps we shouldn't have gone in, but certainly we shouldn't have left, we never ever should have left and the vacuum was created", he said during a photo session with Abadi.

Trump said it was a "great honor" to meet the Iraqi prime minister, the 9th foreign leader received by the USA president. "We have our own plan". "I think we are happy with the [White House] meeting. and we're looking forward to meeting with Congress and others", he said. We're going to get rid of Daesh. "But, maybe, someday, we'll be able to figure that out".

Trump also discussed with Abadi his objections to the Iran nuclear deal negotiated by his predecessor, Obama.

During a 2016 visit to Washington, Abadi sought additional financial and military support for the daunting task of rebuilding Iraqi cities ravaged by 14 years of war.

Abbadi thanked Trump for removing Iraq from a travel ban affecting several Muslim-majority countries.
