Coin-Eating Sea Turtle Dies After Undergoing Second Operation

The green sea turtle named Omsin, "piggy bank" in Thai, began having trouble swimming, being it swallowed 11 pounds of coins that tourists thew into the its pond to make a wish - something vets have urged the public to stop.

The weight of the metal mass had cracked the 25-year-old turtle's shell, and she was rushed to surgery.

"She at least had the chance to swim freely and eat happily before she passed", said Dr. Nantarika Chansue, who removed 5 kilograms of coins from the turtle's stomach in an hours-long operation on March 6.

The female green sea turtle, nicknamed "Omsin" or "Piggy Bank", died of intestinal obstruction that blocked her protein intake, the Associated Press reports.

In a Facebook posting Dr Chansue revealed that Bank had not woken up since the operation and was in a "very serious" condition, and on Tuesday morning she died.

Vet Nantarika Chansue told local media: "At 10:10am she went with peace".

Vets who performed the procedure at Bangkok's Chulalongkorn University earlier in March said the reptile died from blood poisoning caused by consuming loose change over the years.

In Thailand it is commonly believed throwing coins on the turtles will bring good luck due to their usual lifespan of up eight decades.

During that surgery, five surgeons from Chulalongkorn University's veterinary faculty patiently removed the coins over four hours while "Piggy Bank" was under general anesthesia. Many coins had reportedly become corroded or partially dissolved over time. Nickel toxicity also marred her immune system.

Many Thais believe that throwing coins on turtles will bring longevity.

And afterward, the veterinarians showed reporters the pile of hundreds of coins that she had consumed.
