Bottas confident of claiming maiden F1 win

He told the Austrian broadcaster ORF: "We're going to start with Bottas and Hamilton and see how it goes". I see it as a great opportunity for my career to fight for wins and hopefully even for the championship.

"The target with these new regulations was to make this generation of F1 cars the quickest in the history of the sport, and looking at the results from testing, we're well on the way to achieving that".

With a change to the Mercedes driver line-up following the retirement of Nico Rosberg, Wolff is confident the new pairing of Lewis Hamilton and Valtteri Bottas will be as successful as the previous one, and their winning formula will continue.

"It's an exciting time for them because these new cars are a real physical challenge".

"I don't fear that I will be the number two at Mercedes." said the 27-year-old, who played ice hockey with the Melbourne Mustangs on Tuesday.

While Mercedes has said that its two drivers are free to race, many, with an eye on the pre-season form of Ferrari, believe that the German team must learn from its past mistakes and not allow the rivalry between its two drivers to descend into outright warfare.

The Finn has yet to win in his 77 grands prix starts while Hamilton is a three-time world champion and has won 53 races, including 32 with Mercedes.

"As long as I do my job so that my performance on track is at the level the vehicle should be, we're all good", he added.

"So I think going against Lewis I am pretty excited about that".

The three-times world champion was mobbed by fans and media upon his arrival, making his way through the arrivals terminal with a flock of bodies around him. "He's a great reference - everyone knows exactly how good he is".

"I always want to just focus on my job and work as a team".

"I think the first time I was in the new auto, as expected you could definitely see I was getting used to everything", Bottas said at an event in Melbourne on Tuesday morning. If we do our work perfectly, if I do my job perfectly, it's possible [to challenge for the title].
