Middle East Airlines Hit By Secretive US Ban On Passengers' Electronic Devices

"We have no comment on potential security precautions, but will provide an update when appropriate", DHS said in a statement to the BBC.

Also not immediately clear were how many airlines or airports a possible electronics restriction might affect.

An American official was reported by CNN to have told the network this was due to security concerns about passengers boarding direct United States flights from certain countries.

According to numerous reports, U.S. authorities today alerted a number of Middle Eastern and African airlines that starting soon, their passengers will have to check any electronic items larger than a cell phone.

Passengers on certain airlines will no longer be allowed to carry most electronic devices in flight cabins, according to reports.

USA authorities are allegedly requiring multiple countries' airlines to ban passengers of certain flights from bringing on nearly any electronic device, according to reports.

The Jordan-based airline said all electronic devices - aside from cell phones and medical devices - would be "strictly prohibited" for passengers on flights arrive to and departing from the United States, effective Tuesday.

No other airlines had issued any statements or new passenger guidance by late afternoon Monday.

Cabin rules for flights under US jurisdiction are typically set by the US Federal Aviation Administration.

The full list of airlines affected by the new ruling has not yet been published, but Saudi Arabia's Saudia has been named in at least one media report and Royal Jordanian tweeted a warning to its passengers on March 20.

But while that 2014 guidance was formally announced, security officials were tight-lipped Monday about any additional changes that might be afoot following Royal Jordanian's move.

Royal Jordanian has since confirmed that the new rules will apply to Canadian customers flying from Montreal to Amman, as well.
