BHU alumnus Manoj Sinha is PM Modi's pick for UP CM?

India's governing party has chosen a controversial Hindu religious leader known for anti-Muslim rhetoric as the next chief minister of Uttar Pradesh, the country's most populous state.

Adityanath's appointment has been met with a lot of criticism on social media, with many questioning the BJP's election promises.

Uttar Pradesh: Prime Minister Narendra Modi and BJP President Amit Shah to be present at the oath ceremony. Asked if he could be the CM, Maurya said it is for the legislature party to decide and the sanctity of its meeting would be lost if the name of the new chief minister is revealed before that.

Few of the contenders, including Keshav Prasad Maurya, Dinesh Maurya and Manoj Sinha, were also on the list for the CM post but with Yogi Adityanath named as CM designate for Uttar Pradesh, the BJP has put an end to all the speculation. The new CM will have two deputies-state BJP chief Keshav Prasad Maurya, an OBC, and Dinesh Sharma, a Brahmin, now Mayor of Lucknow and vice president of the party.

After an astounding victory in the Assembly polls, the BJP is in the process of deciding the chief ministerial candidate for the politically crucial state.

With a saffron robe-clad mahant at the helm in Uttar Pradesh, the fear is the fine line between state and religion, so vital for a secular state, could just be blurred. Adityanath has several criminal cases against him. He had so far been operating from Gorakhnath temple, which he presides in Gorakhpur and his only organisational ability, proven so far, was in leading his own Hindu Yuva Vahini.

While the BJP MP has largely focused on Hindutva, one can not overlook his contributions to the development cause either.

They organised havans, offered special prayers that he be made state chief minister even when he himself never showed his eagerness to hold the coveted post.

Sources indicated that Adityanath wasn't the choice of some senior BJP leaders and Union Home Minister Rajnath Singh. Their agenda can weigh over his development agenda, as also the person who could lead that agenda.

Interestingly, the newly appointed Uttarakhand chief minister, Trivendra Singh Rawat, is also from the same community.
