Saints, Patriots will tread lightly on Malcolm Butler deal

New England Patriots restricted free agent defensive back Malcolm Butler and the New Orleans Saints have opened contract negotiations, reports NFL Network's Ian Rapoport.

The Saints are hoping to get Butler to agree to an extension and then trade for him.

If Butler doesn't accept an offer, he can choose to sign his one-year tender with the Patriots that will pay him $3.91 million in 2017.

New England also signed coveted free agent and Pro Bowl cornerback Stephon Gilmore.

According to La Canfora, the Patriots are fine with the idea of Butler signing with another team since it will give them a first-round pick.

After all, it was his interception on a shocking Russell Wilson pass attempt that sealed New England's victory in Super Bowl XLIX. If the Eagles had traded the 29-year-old player back to the Saints, the city where he started his National Football League career, Philadelphia surely would have gone up in flames.

The Patriots and Saints, who worked out a trade for the 23-year-old receiver last week, shared the field for joint practices in each of the last two training camps.

That's why the Cooks-for-picks trade needs to play itself out. It did take the team's first-round pick (No. 32 overall) and their third-round compensatory selection (No. 103) to obtain the former 2014 Saints first-round pick. Butler has had his name tied with the Saints for the past week or so as the Patriots were trading for Brandin Cooks.

It's no secret that Cooks now brings a tremendous presence to the receiving corps of the Patriots. It's worth noting this is allowed even though he's a restricted free agent. Despite all their weapons, the Patriots didn't have a receiver like Cooks now in their offense. As the offer stands now, Rick Smith is only willing to send the 57th-overall pick (second round) to the Patriots for Butler, and only under the condition that they are able to sign him to a long term deal. The Patriots needed to add talent, speed, and youth to their wide receiver corp and they get it done with the addition of one player.

However, New England's been aggressive in acquiring talent early in free agency.
