Redskins Rejected $19.5M Cousins Deal in 2016

This report comes just hours after our 49ers beat writer Kevin Jones reported that a grudge held by Snyder toward 49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan is one of the obstacles standing in the way of a trade that would send Cousins to San Francisco.

Cousins personally asked owner Dan Snyder for a trade to get out of the chaos, according to ESPN. This is fantastic to me considering how many Washington fans stick up for Cousins when I point out his poor record against winning teams.

Cousins is coming off a solid season in which he threw for a career-high 4,917 yards with 25 touchdown passes and 12 interceptions as the Redskins finished 8-7-1 and failed to make the playoffs. But this confirms what multiple team and league sources have believed: Cousins has no desire to be here for the long term. At that point, there can be no deal struck until after the Redskins' season. Without signing Cousins to a long-term contract, he might not have as much value in any trade scenario.

Washington's 106.7 The Fan reported that last February the team offered Cousins a three-year deal that averaged $19.5 million per year. This time they used an exclusive franchise tag, though, so no other team can open negotiations with him.

Cousins has been designated an exclusive franchise tag for the second straight season and is set to make $24 mil in 2017.

The 49ers put finding a quarterback at the top of their off-season to-do list after Colin Kapernick opted out of his contract. That's when the Redskins would have the most leverage because a team that missed on a quarterback in free agency would be more desperate and willing to part with more draft picks.
