Hollywood's reigning king and queen, Tom Hanks and Meryl Streep, are about to star in their first movie together.
Hanks would play Washington Post editor Ben Bradlee and Streep is reportedly set to play Post publisher Kay Graham. A judge ruled against a similar Nixon Administration motion against the Post, leading to a landmark Supreme Court case later that month in which a 6-3 decision ruled that the government had satisfied the burden of proof to stop publication of the documents, and that the newspapers could continue to print them.
After military analyst Daniel Ellsberg provided portions of the Pentagon Papers to Bradlee and the Post, which printed them in June 1971, the Attorney General's office demanded the newspaper cease publishing articles about the documents. Fox will handle domestic distribution; global will be Amblin, through its output deals with Universal, eOne, Reliance and others. Meryl and him have previously worked together on A I, while Tom and the director have collaborated on a number of projects including Catch Me If You Can, The Terminal and, most recently, Bridge of Spies. The full Pentagon Papers were released in 2011.
Spielberg is exec producing that film, and he also is one of the interview subjects in the film about WWII's impact on cinema.
Hanks is coming off a celebrated performance as Miracle on the Hudson pilot Chesley Sullenberger in "Sully", while Streep received an Oscar nomination at last month's show for her starring role in "Florence Foster Jenkins". Between the three of them, they've won nine Academy Awards.
Streep would play Graham, while Hanks would take on Bradlee.
