Poachers shoot and kill a rhino ... at the zoo

Vince, a rare white rhinoceros who lived at a zoo west of Paris since 2015, was found shot to death Tuesday morning, his ivory horn hacked off with a chainsaw.

Sudan, the last male Northern white rhinoceros who lives at the Ol Pejeta Conservancy in Kenya, has an armed security detail, and has had part of his horn removed to deter poachers.

Vince was at the zoo for two years, having been brought there along with another young white rhino, Bruce, to join the zoo's existing rhino, Gracie, according to information on the zoo's website.

"His second horn has only been partially cut would indicate that the criminals may have been disturbed or that their equipment turned out to be defective". The poachers likely used a chainsaw to cut off one of the horns, according to a statement from the zoo, which is almost 40 miles west of Paris. The poachers were after the rhino's horn which they absconded with after sawing it off.

"It's possible that the thieves didn't have time to attack the other animals", a source told the paper.

There are surveillance cameras in the zoo, and staff also live on site, according to a Facebook post from the zoo, though no details were offered about what footage they captured. A kilogram of rhino horn sold on the black market for almost $54,000 in 2015, according to the zoo.
