NASCAR's Most Beloved Racing Surface May Not Get A Repave After All

It was a spectacular failure on a day when Harvick was a calendar page or so ahead of his closest competition on track.

Week two of the cup series and NASCAR heads to Atlanta for the Folds of Honor Quik Trip 500, Kurt Busch says the team is in a good place and Richard Petty pays up for infractions. "In the XFINITY Series, you have a lot of diversity as far as the speed in the cars out there - and that's not a bad thing".

With Harvick back in the pack, the rest of the field were left to battle it out for the win with 11 laps to go. The stages for this race are set at the first 85 laps, the next 85 laps and finally finishing the race with 155 laps.

There ended up being 13 speeding penalties handed out throughout the 500 miles on Sunday. After tearing his pit crew a new one previous year for losses on multiple occasions, it was Harvick who had to own up to his miscue on Sunday in Atlanta.

Clint Bowyer (Starting 25th)-Back to running in elite equipment, taking over Tony Stewart's spot in the #14 auto, it was nice see to Bowyer running with the big boys again at Daytona, even if he, again, became a victim of the Mad Max style racing. "I think it'll be corrected next week", Elliott said.

"... I have to go find Marcus Smith and [track president] Ed Clark and beg them not to repave it", Keselowski said, laughing. "I was right there, just needed to pop that bubble". Pit road at Atlanta Motor Speedway has a tight entrance, and Harvick took the ninth and final penalty called for speeding at the entrance. But the penalties can be profound, as Harvick can testify. There were over 10 speeding penalties at Atlanta, compared to one in 2016.

The speeding penalty on pit road - an issue that plagued a bunch of drivers, including two-time defending race victor Jimmie Johnson - knocked Harvick to the end of the lead pack with 11 laps remaining.

NASCAR will implement its new rules package for this race, aimed at making for safer racing.

"My hope is they can get another year or two out of it, and I understand if they can't".

Chase Elliott spent much of Sunday's Folds of Honor QuikTrip 500 running in Kevin Harvick's shadow.

"You have to have great talent and certainly when you look at (Rodney) Childers (Harvick's crew chief) and look at the other guys like Tony Gibson (Busch's crew chief), they're all excellent", he said. "But I have a pretty good reasoning, and I think why it was, but I really don't want everybody else to know".

Could a speeding ticket also determine the outcome of Sunday's Kobalt 400 at Las Vegas Motor Speedway? "But Ford has been a very big part of giving us the resources and the manpower". "It's not that big of a deal".
