Ramjas College violence: 3 policemen suspended

The genesis of the clash was an invite to JNU students Umar Khalid, facing sedition charge, and Shehla Rashid to address a seminar on "Culture of Protests" which was withdrawn by the college authorities following opposition by the ABVP.

On February 23, 2017, it wasn't a usual walk to the Moolchand metro station, for a fear had been instilled in me, of the anticipatory violence, post the disruption of a seminar at Ramjas College, University of Delhi and the retaliatory protest on February 21 and 22 respectively.

"Not only the ABVP completely disrupted the seminar, they were also abusing, beating women and even journalists leaving some profusely bleeding". "Nobody. neither the university, college administration nor the students have approached us for help so far", he had said on a query about law and order situation on the campus.

Situation is tense in the campus of Jammu's Maulana Azad Memorial (MAM) College Jammu after Police picked up seven Muslim students late last night from hostels of the college. In the middle of this people from the ABVP would push or pull people from our side of the divider.

Afreen Sen Chatterjee, president of The Players, Kirori Mal College's theatre society, said, "It is not like plays with such content were not being staged earlier".

Kumar said that the protest march organised was aimed against the university authorities, for remaining mute spectators to ABVP's gundaraj in the university. Upon being asked the question of why an FIR was not lodged, he blatantly spoke of how 10 complaints regarding the same incident caused a hindrance to lodging a common FIR. They even identified themselves as ABVP members. They are demanding the arrest of Akhil Bhartiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) members, who allegedly clashed with students on Wednesday. These activists are against anti-national activities but no such action or protest had been organized by ABVP or any right wing group against Dhruv Saxena and others who had been caught by ATS.

ABVP protestors pelted stones at the windows of the seminar hall while another session was going on, and some speakers and students were also reportedly beaten up outside the campus. Instead of wasting energy on such clashes and counter protests our youth should consider fighting to eradicate different problems of our country which need immediate attention as I mentioned.

Leading the condemnation was Delhi chief minister Arvind Kejriwal, who termed the incident 'shameful'.

In response to the assault, JNU's United Left Front, has called for a demonstration protest ( 23rd Feb) to "Rise in rage against the massive violence unleashed by ABVP in Delhi University, with the active support of Delhi Police", at the Delhi Police Head Quarters (ITO) at 11 am.
