Bogdanovic and McCullough off to Washington

It would have been nice to see the Wizards net someone a little better than Bogdanovic with their first round pick, but the salary relief they get from unloading Nicholson's deal is no small matter.

McCullough, a 2015 first-round pick, played sparingly with Brooklyn, averaging only 2.5 points and 1.2 rebounds in just over five minutes a game. The pick will likely be in the mid-20's, where the Nets have drafted Caris LeVert and Rondae Hollis-Jefferson in recent years. He played in just 16 games due to a torn ACL against Florida State at the Carrier Dome.

The Washington Wizards need depth, and the Brooklyn Nets need draft picks.

Before the Wizards agreed to finalize the trade, a report by CSN Mid-Atlantic two days ago revealed that All-Star point guard John Wall expected his team to make moves to improve the bench.

With the Wizards, Bogdanovic projects as an instant-impact contributor on the perimeter. Lou Williams was a name thrown around plenty, but Houston pulled the trigger first by sending Corey Brewer and a first-round pick in exchange for the veteran.

Nicholson is in his first year with the Wizards after spending the first four years of his career with the Orlando Magic. This trade might have earned a grade in the A-range without throwing McCullough in, but he is still just 22 and showed signs of being a really valuable player previous year. Among the 17 players who have attempted between 260 and 290 3-pointers this season, Bogdanovic is 11th in accuracy. He is a restricted free agent this season, but now that Nicholson is off Washington's books, that should give the team more room to re-sign him this summer along with Otto Porter. The 29-year-old averaged 12 points a game during his first stint with the Nets. Nicholson's ability to rebound and stretch the floor fits what Brooklyn is asking of their big men and his contract isn't onerous for a team that is in the middle of a multiple season rebuild. They would be even higher in the standings if they had not lost eight of their first ten games, and this trade will certainly help them continue to win. The Wizards rank sixth in the National Basketball Association in catch-and-shoot 3-point percentage, since much of the team's halfcourt offense involves screens to set up those kinds of looks.
