Mikaela Shiffrin cruises to 3rd straight slalom world title

Third place went to Frida Hansdotter of Sweden, who climbed from fifth after her first run to finish 1.75 seconds adrift of runaway victor Shiffrin.

She'll be a heavy favorite to win her third straight slalom world championship on Saturday.

Sweden's Frida Hansdotter rounded out the podium, taking third with her time of 1:39.02.

"Tessa deserves winning this, she's done so well all season", Shiffrin said, according to the International Ski Federation.

Shiffrin's silver, after the fastest second run thanks to a very strong bottom section, bodes well for Saturday's slalom in which she will start as outright favourite to claim a third consecutive title.

"I didn't see my time until I got all the way through and I knew I had a good run, but I didn't know it was that good until I saw the time", said Shiffrin.

"I heard the crowd screaming for Wendy and I knew she must have had a great run, and I just thought you know what, 'today's my day, not yours, '" said Shiffrin.

Worley, born to an Australian father and French mother, joins an elite band of racers to have won two giant slalom golds - only Anja Paerson, Deborah Compagnoni, Mariele Goitschel and Vreni Schneider having previously achieved the feat.

Worley, who helped France to team event gold on Tuesday, finished 0.34 seconds ahead of American Shiffrin, while Sofia Goggia of Italy took bronze, 0.74secs off the pace. "I'm happy to walk away from here with two medals".

She adds: "Winning the World Championships is the best thing for your career, worst thing for your health".

Eagle-Vail's Mikaela Shiffrin announced herself as a force to be reckoned with in giant slalom on Thursday, claiming a silver medal in the event at the World Alpine Ski Championships in St. Moritz, Switzerland.

"That win (in 2013) was huge and I realized how big ski racing can be, especially in countries like Austria, Germany (and) Switzerland". "I tried to tell myself "ok, now push harder and try to ski like I used to down the whole run".

It was actually really good for the second run.

First run I felt like I left something out on the hill, second run I really feel like I attacked.

"I think about [becoming the overall World Cup champion] and it's a dream to win, but I'm not expecting to win this year", Shiffrin told the Denver Post last month.
