Miami Dolphins trying to trade Branden Albert before releasing him

The offensive line was still a point of contention last season despite improving on the number of sacks given up a year ago. If he isn't healthy then that productive offensive line isn't so productive. Why?

He was cut by Miami this week and, with the Dallas Cowboys needing help at defensive end, it's only a matter of time the two are linked.

The Dolphins signed Albert in 2014.

Set to cost Miami a whopping $10.5 million in 2017, Williams' departure will save the team $8.5 million in salary-cap room. Teams don't typically trade for older players unless they believe those players are the missing piece and are trying to squeeze the last bit of productivity to make a run to the or Super Bowl.

Albert is a solid, veteran player who would give the Jaguars consistency at left tackle.

Albert could immediately step in to protect Eli Manning's blind side. There are a few teams out there that can use a left tackle right now.

Though Albert represents an immediate upgrade on the offensive line, he also comes with risks. He hasn't played all 16 games since 2011 with Kansas City.

With Chris Long and Jabaal Sheard on track to become unrestricted free agents, the Patriots are going to be left with Trey Flowers and special teamer Geneo Grissom at defensive end.

Tunsil spent most of his rookie season at guard, but he was always projected to move to left tackle eventually.

Thursday's roster moves means the Dolphins will have the 10 most cap space heading into free agency, which official begins on March 7.

The cap space freed up by releasing Williams and Mitchell and doing whatever happens with Albert will likely be directed at a defensive overhaul this spring. He's still viewed as the Dolphins' left tackle of the future, though. Reese, who doesn't have much history trading for pricy veterans, could have his hand forced with a team in win-now mode.

With Ereck Flowers expected to make a position change, Albert is certainly worth a look if the New York Giants are unable to land Andrew Whitworth on the open market.
