Trump asks black reporter to set up meeting with Congressional Black Caucus

Ryan asked the following question: "Are you going to include the CBC [Congressional Black Caucus], Mr. President, in your conversations with your urban agenda, your inner city agenda, as well as-".

As for Ryan, she thanked Trump for answering her questions, and said that she's a "journalist not a convener!" Ryan is black. "Are they friends of yours?"

"I would love to meet with the Black Caucus".

Trump and the Congressional Black Caucus have not yet met, although White House spokesman Sean Spicer said in January that a plan for a meeting was in the works.

During the presser, Trump took a question from April Ryan, a longtime journalist who is now the White House correspondent for American Urban Radio Networks.

Ryan declined to set up the meeting, noting that while she knows some of the members of the CBC, she is just a reporter and was simply asking a question - as reporters do.

However, moments before the afternoon press conference began, Vice President Mike Pence cast a history making, tie-breaker vote to confirm another one of President Trump's most contentious nominees - incoming Education Secretary Betsy DeVos. Trump speculated that Cummings was told a meeting would be bad for the congressman.

The Congressional Tri-Caucus recently highlighted red line issues they're demanding the administration of President Donald J. Trump not cross.

"We called, called, called, they can't make a meeting with him".

"I was all set to have that meeting".

'Well I would, ' Trump said. "It was so fast in putting it together that the White House press office staff did not have place cards for us". "Set up the meeting. It's bad politics.' And that's part of the problem with this country". I was actually looking forward to meeting with the President about the skyrocketing price of prescription drugs.

The Congressional Black Caucus' Twitter feed also tweeted a letter it sent to Trump the day before he was inaugurated but added he never wrote back.

Leading up to the exchange with Ryan, Trump said he would be "working very hard" to "fix" the inner cities, claiming that many black and Hispanic communities are "living in hell".
