Westminster Best in Show dog 2017: Rumor the German Shepherd wins

The 141st #WKCDogShow Best in Show is "Rumor" the German Shepherd!

More than 2,800 dogs in 200 breeds were competing for the top prize in the New York City show, the second-oldest sporting event in the United States behind the Kentucky Derby horse race.

Pat Quigley, the owner of Lajosmegyi Kennel in Washington, says that with a professional handler included, the price tag for a year of showing or "campaigning" a dog leading up to Westminster can be more than $250,000.

Since last year's competition, Rumor had been a house pet for handler and co-owner Kent Boyles at his home in Wisconsin and was heading toward having puppies before returning to competition only last month, according to The Associated Press.

A toy fox terrier just wanted to stand still. "This was definitely the ultimate type of win for her", Boyles said.

The champion was crowned after an extensive judging finale during which Rumor, a crowd favorite, was paraded with six other contenders including a majestic Irish Setter named Adrian, and a ground-hugging Pekingese furball named Chuckie.

"She is just magnificent", Judge Thomas H. Bradley III said, in an interview with broadcasters about his pick.

"She is just magnificent", Bradley said of the bright-eyed victor.

It was even more impressive considering Rumor had been in semi-retirement after having finished second a year ago to C.J., a German shorthaired pointer.

Rumor raised up for a well-deserved treat right after the win. Boyles told ABC News Rumor's favorite post-win treat is a big, juicy NY strip steak.

Mia made a hot start to her lap but hit a little trouble when she came to the first hurdle and let her hound-like instincts take over - namely sniffing around for a good scent.
