Suspect Arrested In Death Of N. Korean Dictator's Half-Brother

Kim Jong Nam, the eldest son of late leader Kim Jong Il, had spoken out publicly against his family's control of North Korea.

Kim Jong Nam also criticized North Korea's dynastic succession and that he had no interest in running the country, which remains in the iron grip of his half-brother.

He told medical workers before he died that he had been attacked with a chemical spray, the Malaysian officials said. Malaysian officials refused, according to the wire service. Jong Nam "suffered burns as a result of the liquid" and died en route to a nearby hospital.

The half-brother of North Korea's leader was killed in Kuala Lumpur airport as he was on his way to China, it has been reported.

His father banished him from North Korea and he had lived in exile ever since.

The suspected assassination of the half-brother of North Korean dictator Kim Jong Un has helped thrust the secretive nation and its secretive first family back into the limelight.

The execution of Kim Jong-Un's uncle Jang Song Thaek, once the second most powerful man in the isolated country, sent shockwaves beyond North Korea's borders.

Kim Jong Nam had been living in Macau, an autonomous Chinese territory known for its gambling industry, and posed no threat of overthrowing the North Korean regime.

Lee was the cousin of Kim Jong Nam, who was killed in Kuala Lumpur on Monday.

According to public safety authorities, Kim Jong Nam apparently spent a fair amount of time in Europe during his youth.

Kim Jong Nam was with some other individuals at the time who were considered to be his wife and children.

"If the murder of Kim Jong Nam was confirmed to be committed by the North Korean regime, that would clearly depict the brutality and inhumanity of the Kim Jong Un regime", South Korean Acting President and Prime Minister Hwang Kyo-ahn said.

Meanwhile in Pyongyang, Kim Jong Un attended a mass rally marking 75 years since his father was born.

The reported killing came as North Korea celebrated its latest missile launch, which foreign experts were analysing for evidence of advancement in the country's missile capabilities. What does his death mean to North Koreans who might seek reform? It indicates Kim Jong Nam had followers and his brother "felt insecure about it", he said.

He also frequented casinos, five-star hotels and traveled around Asia, with little say in North Korean affairs.

Speculation has been rife as to the identity of Kim Jong-nam's assassin.

"If you look at what Kim Jong Un has been doing, he has been pretty ruthlessly trying to eliminate his opposition", he said.

Jong Nam was in line to become the next totalitarian ruler of North Korea, but his star dimmed after his 2001 arrest in Tokyo for possessing a fake passport.
