Satyarthi's Nobel prize replica recovered

Hailing the Delhi Police for finding the stolen replica of the Nobel Peace prize, Nobel laureate Kailash Satyarthi on Sunday said that no thief can escape from the police's hand, if the force decides to nab the miscreants.

"We have recovered the replica of the Satyarthi's Nobel prize, other medals, laptops, jewellery and pens gifted by other countries to him and also some expensive watches", he said.

It was not clear if the nobel citation had been recovered.

However, the police noted that the citation was not among the items recovered from Vinod (35), Sonu (28) and Rajan (25).

The child rights activist won the Nobel Peace Prize in 2014. While both Rajan and Vinod are illiterate, Sunil, who is unmarried, is a Class VI dropout and was working in a grocery shop as a helper, said DCP (southeast) Romil Baniya. The police haverecovered the stolen items. "We have shown them pictures but they haven't been able to recall about the citation", said a senior police officer. The burglary took place in the wee hours of February 7 and police received information about the theft at Satyarthi's flat in Aravali Apartments around 9 am.

Satyarthi had said he was deeply pained by the "unfortunate incident" and added that the theft has strengthened his resolve to continue working for the cause of children. The brothers, who are originally from Gorakhpur in Uttar Pradesh, were arrested on Saturday night following a tip-off by an informer.

Going through the records, police found a similar modus operandi in a burglary case registered previous year. Delhi police commissioner Amulya Patnaik also tweeted about the case being solved. They then shifted to Sangam Vihar but the brothers continued to work in the apartment area as construction workers or painters. The accused told the police that they were familiar with the topography of the area as they used to live in the slums around the apartment complex till 2005 when these were demolished.

During sustained interrogation, the accused disclosed that when they had carried out the burglary, they did not realise the value of the replica of Nobel prize but after watching it on TV, they realised it.
