Powerful Winter Storm Hits US Northeast

By mid-morning, 9 inches of snow had already been recorded at LaGuardia and Newark airports.

The core of the storm will occur between 10 a.m. and 5 p.m.

Storm Team 4 says that after the winter storm passes, temperatures will drop into the low 30s on Friday.

Schools in NY were closed as well as in other areas of the northeast including Philadelphia and Boston.

The Washington Post's Capital Weather Gang forecasts Thursday morning predicted up to 11 inches of snow in parts of New York City and up to 14 inches in Boston.

Sam Lopresti, of Jersey City, New Jersey, warm and dry in his workplace, said he'd been pleasantly surprised that his early-morning train trip to Manhattan had gone smoothly.

A winter storm alert is in effect throughout the five boroughs until 6 p.m. and parts of the Bronx are likely to see the largest accumulation of snow. The area is expected to get somewhere between 3 and 6 inches by Thursday night. "So, even after the storm winds down - 7 o'clock, 8 o'clock, 9 o'clock tonight - it's going to still feel like it's snowing with all these high winds", state Highway Administrator Tom Tinlin told WBUR.

New Yorkers woke up to near-blizzard conditions as wind-driven snow reduced visibility, made streets almost impassible and morning commutes a challenge at best.

At Palm Beach International Airport, there were two delayed and 75 canceled flights listed as of 11:30 a.m., according to flight-tracking website FlightAware.com.

In advance of Niko, many airlines have posted travel alerts warning passengers their flights could be cancelled.

You can see an updated list of closures for the region as they become available from our partners at NBC 4 NY.

It could become the region's most powerful storm so far this winter.

Folks don't seem to be impacted by the cancellations, it appears most people were either notified or checked with their airlines for flight information - which is what you're supposed to do.
