Mark Warburton: Rangers are lucky to have someone of Frank McParland's quality

However, that was soon refuted in media reports afterwards, with Mark Warburton himself telling BBC reporters that he was unaware of the Rangers statement regarding his resignation.

The position of Rangers manager Mark Warburton has been thrown into doubt after he reportedly denied resigning just minutes after the club announced his departure.

Rangers announced on Friday night that Warburton's tenure had come to an end after his resignation had been accepted by the club's board.

He had also given a ringing endorsement to McParland earlier on Friday following speculation the head of recruitment was poised to quit.

Earlier this week Rangers agreed to Warburton's agent Dave Lockwood's request to let him go without the Ibrox club demanding compensation if he got a new job, but then Warburton missed out on the manager's post at Nottingham Forest.

Rangers' Under-20s coach Graeme Murty is expected to take charge of the team on in interim basis.

Warburton was appointed in June 2015 and led Rangers to the Scottish Championship title, taking them back into the top flight, but they have been inconsistent this season and are third in the Premiership, 27 points behind Celtic.

"The board is very appreciative of the good work previously done by the management team but believes it had no alternative".

McParland, who was with Warburton at Brentford, is now on holiday in Dubai but ahead of the William Hill Scottish Cup fifth-round tie against Morton on Sunday, Warburton said: "I've said time and again - his track record is outstanding".
