Landslides kill 12 on Indonesia's Bali island

Landslides killed 12 people on the Indonesian resort island of Bali after torrential rain lashed the area, Indonesia's disaster agency said on Friday.

One family lost a 33-year-old woman, her seven-year-old daughter and one-year-old son.

Unrelenting heavy rain and poor slope conditions caused a landslide in Songan Village in the north-east of Indonesia's popular tourist island at 11pm local time yesterday (2am AEDT). Another 10-year-old died in another nearby village.

It's believed no Australians are among those killed or injured.

"We warn people to continue to be vigilant about further disasters", Bali Disaster Mitigation Agency spokesperson Sutopo Purwo Nugroho told the Jakarta Post.

"All victims have been evacuated and the injured have been taken to hospital", said Indra Kalak, an agency official in Bali.

Heavy downpours were blamed for the disaster in Bulurejo village of Karanganyar district, Risky A, senior official at the provincial disaster management agency said.

Earlier, 12 people were killed in landslides that wiped out several homes in three mountain villages.

Sutopo also said more heavy rain is possible in the coming days, which could mean additional landslides and flooding.
